The little girl, Vivian, born in 1809, was my wife’s great-great-aunt. She was the child of a New York City police officer who was killed in the line of duty shortly after this picture of her in her communion dress was taken. Vivian was a shy girl who was always chasing after her older sister. The unoccupied building is in front of a horse farm property in Southold, New York, which I visited briefly. The crows and a monochrome treatment of the composite were added to impart a sense of foreboding.
